James Bond; a Fictional Alcoholic

According to Nick Allen at the UK newspaper: The Telegraph, “James Bond declared ‘severe’ alcoholic by public health academics.” In this analysis, James Bond was found to have a drink 109 times, which is on average, 4.5 times per film, with a binge record of consuming 24 units of alcohol in the film Quantum of Solace.

While this image of a suave man drinking whilst casually saving the world is great for the film world, it is very different for the real world. In the real world there are consequences to mistakes that are made while inebriated. In James Bond’s world he is able to make up for these mistakes with his extreme levels of swagger, charm, and patriotism. In the real world, people tend to have more drastic consequences such as jail time, mandatory rehabilitation, mandatory counseling services, and loss of a job to name a few.

Drinking is a great activity when done responsibly and should not be discouraged. However, engaging in dangerous activity and other irresponsible behavior should be discouraged. So unless you have a license to kill and are a character in a movie, leave these dangerous behaviors to the professional: Bond, James Bond.
